| Fire Surrounds |
| |

Earsham Hall started manufacturing pine fire surrounds in the mid seventies, the beginning of the current trend towards stripped pine.
Each pine fire surround in this range has been carefully designed with great attention being paid to the detail and proportion.
As standard our pine fire surrounds are given our unique Earsham Hall hand waxed finish. However if you require a special colour we can, for a small extra charge, stain to a sample or paint it. It must be appreciated however that it is not always possible to achieve an exact match and we cannot change the grain pattern from pine
We also have a selection of honed and polished marble fire surrounds.

| Cast Iron Inserts |
| |

These are a standard size as they are cast from a mould.
They normally require a minimum rebate of about 1“ this is for the thickness of the insert plus the bed of concrete which used to seal the insert to the wall and to take up any unevenness of the wall.
Always check that the internal opening size of the surround suits the insert. Most inserts are designed for use with a 36” x 36” fire surround opening.
Most Cast Iron inserts are available in three finishes, Black, Highlighted Polish and Full Polish
| All of our cast iron inserts are a very heavy, good quality casting, and are suitable for use with solid fuel or a decorative gas fire.
When burning solid fuel, a new cast iron fireplace must be tempered by burning small fires initially. |

| Electric Fires |
| |

The new generation of Flicker effect electric fires provide a further convenient alternative to a real fire. There is a choice of freestanding designs and even a model that can be supplied complete with a traditional cast iron tiled insert. They do not require a flue or specialist installation and provide up to 2kw of heat output.
Electraflame Electric Fires
Electraflame make a selection of electric fires in a range of standard sizes or made to measure to fit most fireplaces.
The fire comprises of a steel tray that can be made with or without legs depending on where it is to be used. An ash pan cover should be used to conceal the legs and the fan (on heat producing fires). The steel tray contains a 60w-fireglow bulb and flicker mechanism covered by a fibreglass casing and with real coal on top to produce a flickering, glowing coal firebed. If an ordinary 60w light bulb is used the effect will be paler and not so realistic.
Electraflame make 3 types of fire that are all easily fitted and ready to use. All come complete with a 2m cable and plug. |

| Decorative Gas Fires |
| |

Our range of decorative gas fires (DGF's) combine the cosy atmosphere of a traditional open fire with the convenience of gas.
They are clean, efficient and very reliable. DGF's are available to fit all of our cast iron inserts. We can also supply special sizes to convert most existing installations. While a DGF does radiate a good amount of heat it is not normally sufficient to allow for the fire to be used as the only source of heating.
Many of the gas fires we offer are available for use with bottled LPG gas.

| Convector Box Fires |
| |
A convector box fire produces up to double the heat output of a standard DGF by drawing cool air beneath the grate, heating it as it passes through a convection chamber at the back of the fire and then expelling the hot air back into the room through a vent above the fire. Although this type of fire is typically installed with a marble back panel the introduction of the convector insert has made it possible to combine the heat output of a convector fire with the traditional look of a tiled cast iron insert.
Most convector fires can be used with a powered flue. A powered flue can be used when there is no chimney or flue. It uses an extractor unit mounted on an outer wall to vent the combustion gases directly outside. A mains electricity supply is needed to operate this system. |

| Choosing a Fireplace |
| |

Before purchasing any fireplace you will need to make sure it is suitable for your home.
We will need to know what fuel you will be using, and be aware of what type of chimney or flue you have. We shall also require the following information:
Do you have an existing fireplace?
Do you have a chimney breast, and if so how wide it is?
And if you require a gas fire, is it natural gas or LPG?
If you do not have a chimney we have a range of balanced and powered flue models suitable for you.
We strongly recommend that all Earsham Hall products are fitted by expert installers and where appropriate by CORGI registered personnel. |

| Hearths & Tiles |
| |

Almost all fire surrounds must include a hearth, the only exception being certain types of wall mounted gas fires. Hearths must be constructed of non-combustible materials.
Hearth Materials
Marble - different levels of hardness and veining. Wide variety of colours available.
Agglomerate - (also called conglomerate) - made from marble dust and chips. As it is a man-made stone, it is not as fragile as natural marble.
Granite - a very hard material available in a variety of colours.
Slate - a softer material that does mark easily. Scratches can be removed with very fine ‘wet and dry’ paper and slate oil. Riven slate has an uneven rustic look. Polished slate has a soft sheen. Green slate is also available.
Definitions
Boxing - This is the process of sticking a strip of the material from which the hearth is made to the underside of the hearth at the front and two sides thus forming a hollow ‘box’. The purpose of this is to increase the height of the hearth to raise it well above any floor coverings and in the case of a gas fire to meet regulations.
Slabbing / Supply in 3 - If a boxed hearth or a back panel is being used with a real fire they must be protected from the possible cracking that the heat could cause. This is achieved by cutting the top surface of the hearth and the back panel into three pieces in order to form expansion joints.
In the case of boxed hearths, and also back panels, they must be provided with a backing of special concrete to help dissipate the heat from the fire. This is known as slabbing. When a boxed hearth is slabbed the cavity is filled with cement. When a back panel is slabbed it made up to approximately 50mm thick with a backing of cement (The fires surround rebate must allow for this). Slabbed hearths and back panels are supplied pre-assembled in one piece with the expansion joints grouted and polished.
HEARTH PLATES for Real Fires- These protect the area of the hearth directly in
front of the fire and are required for any real fire or a gas fire with an input of above 7KW.
Metal hearth plates are fixed to the surface of the hearth, granite hearth plates are inset flush with the surface of the hearth. In the case of a granite hearth, a hearth plate can be provided in the same granite free of charge. |

| Balanced Flue Fires |
| |
Some properties have no chimney or flue, in which case a balanced flue or powered flue is needed.
Balanced flues do not require an electricity supply. They operate via a twin-walled pipe which exits horizontally through an external wall or vertically through the roof. The outer pipe draws air from the outside while the inner pipe expels the products of combustion. |
